Health is True Wealth

My mum asked me last minute to write a poem for some health summit ’something’ in the Bahamas. You really can’t tell your mother no, and plus, I’m not one to back down from the stage. I wrote several pages, but things weren’t flowing quite right. After several edits, I ran it by my brother Miriosh. Then he said the one phrase, “You know health is wealth.” That’s when the muse started speaking to me. I sat down and wrote a whole new piece. Here you go.

Health is True Wealth

How do you write a poem
about well being?
Well, relate it to something
with meaning
and seeing how the economy is kind of slow
I put this poem to terms
people will know.

You see, people understand
when you start to talk about
the money in peoples hands.

…or the lack there of…
…cause honestly

Health is true wealth.

It starts when we realize our worth
and where we begin
fearfully and wonderfully
formed and fashioned
with so much potential within,

So much potential within,
that the richest mans bank account
cant even begin to contend

Simply said,we start off…rich!
I mean, if you ask any
sick and dying millionaire
how he’d want his life measured
he would gladly take wellness
and exchange all his treasures.

Cause he knows,
Health is true wealth,

But
what do you do
with the resources you have?
I ask,
do you properly maintain your property,
and how do you handle your assets?
cause infrastructure isn’t everlasting.

People forget these things
which is why we’re passing
and the majority of us
from a preventative diseases.
Which simply means,
we are being destroyed
by what we can avoid.

How?
by our lifestyle.
I mean, I see people practically
throwing away money,
by buying fats and sugar
and foods that makes them sick.

Then turn around
and pay for pills and medicine
hoping for a quick fix.

And that’s just like saving money in holey pocket.
Just hopeless.

Then tell me, “Healthy food is expensive.
Plus, I don’t eat fruits, beans, or fiber.
Why bouy?
All o’ dat is that bland food
dat di s make me choke.”
I tell’em,
First of all, you need to learn how to cook.
its better to invest now
even though you think you’re broke
cause later, when you pay with your life
them medical bills ain’t a joke.

Invest now, by exercising, by eating right.
Invest now, spend time with your Creator
and increase the quality of your life.
Invest now, not to leave a wonderful will for you children
when you pass.
But to live a wonderful life still with your children while you
watch time passes.

Remember, health is true wealth
and poverty,
of your wallet and body
stem from a state of mind
which is why
its important
you educate yourself
while there is still time.

So when you leave
please remember,
our fitness
affects the finances.
There’s no question.
So remember this poem,
especially in this time of recession.

And I hope
that you invest in your life
that you may you be healthy,
wealthy and wise
and may you all
multiply your blessings.
